TIPS FOR GAS APPLIANCE SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

It is extremely important that gas appliances are kept well maintained and serviced regularly, to keep them running safely and efficiently. Following are some handy tips to bear in mind:

  • Only someone qualified should work on your gas appliances. Under no circumstances should you or an unqualified person attempt to repair or service gas appliances.
  • Make sure that your appliance is serviced regularly, according to the manufacturer’s recommendation in the instruction manual.
  • Understand how to operate your appliance correctly and safely, by reading the owner’s manual carefully.
  • A clogged burner can lead to problems, so make sure to have it checked and cleaned regularly, to avoid dust and soot build-up.
  • Fans and air filters can also become clogged, leading to overheating and combustion problems. Depending on the make and model of your appliance, you might be able to do this yourself. Check your owner’s manual to see if this is recommended and how to do it yourself.
  • Have a licensed gas technician check hoses, flues, and connections for leaks, as well as damage, blockages, and corrosion.
  • Regulators should also be checked regularly by someone qualified, and replaced if necessary.

GAS SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

IN THE EVENT THAT YOU SMELL GAS, AND SUSPECT THAT YOUR APPLIANCE MAY BE LEAKING GAS, THEN TAKE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:

  • Turn off the gas at the source, avoiding contact with visible gas leak, since the stream of gas can result in cold burns
  • Extinguish all flames, and do not smoke or strike a match in the area
  • Do not use electrical devices, cell phones or electric switches
  • If the leakage occurs inside your home, and it is safe to do so, open all doors and windows immediately
  • Keep everyone away from the affected area until the gas has dissipated
  • Phone your gas supplier from a safe distance, and arrange for them to repair your appliance as soon as possible

GAS APPLIANCES WHICH ARE WORKING PROPERLY ARE PERFECTLY SAFE, BUT WHEN THEY MALFUNCTION, CARBON MONOXIDE COULD BE GENERATED. SIGNS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING INCLUDE NAUSEA, HEADACHES, BREATHLESSNESS, DIZZINESS, COLLAPSE, AND LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS. IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS WHILE OPERATING A GAS APPLIANCE, THEN STOP USING IT UNTIL IT HAS BEEN SERVICED AND/OR REPAIRED BY YOUR GAS SUPPLIER.
